PC to Next, or direct to the SD

Post by robpearmain » Mon Dec 25, 2017 7:57 pm

Is there any way to write directly (transfer SNA) to the SD card from a PC while the SD card is in the Next

Would a wireless SD care be supported, or perhaps some kind of link cable?

I'm in the process of experimenting with a RS232 PC serial link cable but don't have anything final as yet plus there are safety concerns with voltage load on the Next board FPGA for that method. It would be awesome to be able to link the Next to a PC/Mac. There is the ESP8266 Wifi module too but I believe that is something that we will see more of in future updates.

I've read on facebook that members are successfully using wireless SD cards with their Next. Here are two posts on the official Spectrum Next Facebook group detailing the Toshiba FlashAir Wireless SD card:

Thanks for the info.

I used to be happy to sit for 7 mins as a tape loaded, now I can’t wait to move an SD from a PC to the Next 😀

No problem. I remember those days of 7 min loads :) I've was spoilt by the +3 disk drive and Multiface 3 system back in the day then in recent years by my serial downloader which usually sends a SNA in 7 seconds!

I did use emulators for a while but I prefer to use the real hardware when I can.

I've put all of the software I need on one single SD card for the Next ;)

I am using a TOSHIBA Air WiFi card (W03) and it mostly works for moving files around - you do need to "remount" though as obviously NextOS will not know anout FAT allocation changes otherwise. I am also very close to using the WiFi module to do file transfer as well (the same principle should work with KevB's serial cable when it is safe...

Yeah, the use of TTL serial modules is AT YOUR OWN RISK until a member of the official team gives the all clear as to which modules are safe if at all.

I'm currently developing my Z80 and PC serial download software. Good luck with your WiFi project Timbucus :)

I have bought W-04 (32GB)

I am using a Mac. It has created a FlashAir folder for me on the Mac, and I drag files in to this. How do these then appear on the Next, and what folder (DCIM?)

Any help much appreciated

I'm planning "something like this" if putting the Next Board into my 48k Plus case which looks nearly 100% as new. This is because I don't want to drill more holes into the case than necessary. - Does the Next work with 32G or 64G SD cards?

P.S.:@robpearmain
DCIM is the folder used for digital media. It's mainly used by cameras for pictures or videos.

@Mac: The Mac also supports file shares or possibly direct copy commands. I think it is possible to use these. Maybe it is easier than this FlashAir stuff...

The problem is the card. It does not appear on my list of network devices, I shall try on a windows PC and see if I get any further

Yes I think you should... - As I don't have a Toshiba WiFi Card yet I don't have any tips for macOS so far.
