Firmware 1.1 issue

Post by beanz » Sun Oct 06, 2019 3:00 pm

I've been trying to get the new release working without success, Although I have updated the core etc.

The problem is I am using the next via VGA and I don't see where on the new distribution the config.ini file is, the tbblue folder isn't there anymore.

When I boot the next I just get a long beep sound, using my old SD card it works fine (even with the new 3.0 core). I just want to configure the new SD card for VGA output and don't see where I can do that what with the TBBlue folder missing. I've read the guide again but it still references editing the config.ini file...which was in the tbblue folder and I don't see it anywhere else.

(btw I can access the config screen holding space down but it doesn't have anything on there regarding video output).

What used to be the tbblue folder has moved to the machines/next folder (to facilitate future alternate multicore cores cohabiting the SD card tidily).

First thing to try is to copy your old config.ini into the new folder.

If that doesn’t work, post your old config.ini contents here and we can advise further.

(The new config.ini that ships with the latest distro starts up in a testcard mode that cycles through all the video modes in turn, allowing you to choose a suitable one. If you’re not seeing anything then it probably just means your display is not capable of showing VGA timing 0, which is the first one in the cycle. Normal procedure would be to wait until something is shown, or to speed up the progression through the cycle by pressing N to try each next timing. Without pressing N, each one is tried for quite a long time, to allow for displays which take a while to sync.)

Thanks,

Yes I'm not seeing anything on bootup (unless I hold space then the config/update screen is shown), I just get the long beep.

As you suggest I'll try to copy my old config.ini which does work on the old SD card over tonight and post it here if I'm not successful.

Ok so I copied the config.ini from my old SDcard (out of the Tbblue folder) and put it on the new SD card with 1.1 on it (in the machines folder).

I still get a black screen and a long beep after about 2-3 seconds.

Again I have succesfully updated the core etc using the new SD card and 1.1 as the update method works and holding space on startup does take me to the config screen...it just wont boot up "normally".

Switching back to my old SD card it works fine with this same config file (but now reports firmware 1.10C and core 3.00.00).

Could it be an issue with the SD card?

Here is the config.ini that works on the old card but wont work on a new card with the 1.1 files freshly installed

Ok cool. Trust me nothing is broken. What would be more useful is the old ini file, as that will tell us what the working settings were.

Here is the one I use currently and is set up for VGA without esxdos which you can edit / compare to the one you currently have. Remember this file has now been moved to the machines/next directory.

Code: Select all

The "timing" parameter is a global one. I see in yours you have VGA 0 selected -- I have VGA 1 selected because my monitor cannot handle pentagon timing at VGA 0.

The global "timing" parameter is what is modified by the testcard on boot up. It gets applied to all menu items with timing set to (the illegal) 8.

Make sure you download the repo again as a new set of commits happened yesterday, along with a better core 3.00.00 (RC5).

Hi, that is the 'old' file, that works and has been working on my old setup (and still does). However when I use it (or the default one) on the new 1.1 release I get the black screen and long beep.

It's not the SD card as I backed up my working one...wiped it, installed 1.1 and the tried both default and old ini file and still get the same results of black screen and long beep. Going back to the backup (Again with the same ini file that fails on the new 1.1) it all works fine.
