I'd like to see a core designed as a completely new machine. One which thinks outside the paradigm of CPU/GPU. To use the FPGA more intuitively and see what it's really capable of as a home computer.

I don't know for sure, but just governing from the specs of each machine I'd say no. The main reason: the MegaDrive CPU is 16-bit and has many more instructions (including variants such as move.w and move.l, etc). So I'm guessing the ZX Spectrum Next FPGA isn't powerful enough (i.e. have enough spac...

I put together this handy spreadsheet of ASM instructions, which has a tab for the new NEXT opcodes and includes byte sizes and timings. It also indicates which flags are set.
