NextBASIC wish list: direct loading of BASIC programs into a memory bank

This is where most of us started. Classic Spectrum basic.

NextBASIC wish list: direct loading of BASIC programs into a memory bank

Postby programandala.net » Sat May 23, 2020 10:54 am

One feature I miss in NextBASIC is to load a BASIC program directly into a memory bank:

Code: Select all

LOAD BANK n "filespec"
Currently the only way is to copy a line range of the current program:

Code: Select all

BANK n LINE start,end
But it's a direct command, it cannot be included in a program, what makes it impractical.

Until `LOAD BANK n "filespec"` is implemented (or an equivalent dot command), or at least `BANK n LINE start, end` is allowed to run in a program (therefore requiring `MERGE` first), I use an alternative method.

You just save the banked section of BASIC with:

SAVE "blah.bnk" BANK n

and reload it with:

LOAD "blah.bnk" BANK n

Yes, of course. But first the banked section has to be manually created with `BANK LINE` on the Next. I prefer to build on Linux all the target files, ready to run on the Next.

The method I use is simpler and faster for me: no need to prepare files with the Next.
