How to handle the storage of pattern data?

Post by retrocoder » Wed Oct 18, 2017 7:46 am

As I am developing the code and data for my game, it soon became obvious that the pattern data for my sprites is using a lot of memory. Is there a preferred way of handling all the pattern data? For example, should it just be loaded from the file system as required or should it be held in the paged memory and somehow transferred as required?

There's no right or wrong answer. Personally I like to load as much into memory banks as possible, but loading from sd card is so quick you could just load each level on the fly. If your game has a lot of graphics you may even end up loading and banking each level on the fly. Horses for courses.
