UPDATE #57 The Next is shipping (and other bits)

Postby mitja_i » Mon Feb 17, 2020 9:09 am

We are GO!
If you have been following social media as of late, you might have noticed a few happy people sharing pictures of their Spectrum Next unboxed, running games, and generally being merry about finally getting their long delayed computers delivered. It has been an amazing week for the team and community alike, as we finally start fulfilling our mission to, well, make you proud that you've made the Next happen. Your belief and support brought us here, and the Next has arrived thanks to your backing (and patience!)

Thus earlier this week we started shipping the Base models to all backers, and have now completed the shipping of the lot. Next week the Plus model will be shipped in a single lot, quickly followed by the Accelerated version. We are moving as quickly as we can between assembling at SMS and shipping to more than 60 countries around the world, so your Next will be at home soon.

tl;dr:

Base units: ALL SHIPPED
Plus units: Shipping week of the 17th of February
Accelerated units: Shipping right after Plus units

...
Backer 423 @ 37% funded, 10th hour. Base version. Shipping nr. 533. Received February 19, 2020.
Backer 1027 @ 141% funded, 10th minute.

Original 48K (issue 4b) with IF1, two microdrives and vDrive.

Looking at what people are willing to pay for the base model on ebay, those who are selling are getting a rather decent ROI =) I would have expected more boards to appear on ebay though..

(no, I'm not looking to sell mine, when it ships)

Awesome news! But, how can I get tracking number if it is already shipped?

You already have your tracking number if it has shipped.

Apart from about 40 tracking number emails which were bounced back by people's email servers.

Quite a few people have seen their tracking number emails go into the email spam folder, even if they whitelisted the sending address. Crappy email clients/servers.

If you backed a base model and you haven't had your email yet, check which email address you backed it with first, then check your spam folder, then email info@specnext.com.

Plus and Accelerated Nexts haven't shipped yet. Expect the Plus models to start shipping very soon.

Thanks for some info. But before we read:
-"Plus units: Shipping week of the 17th of February
Accelerated units: Shipping right after Plus units"

Than what's the trouble now with shipping of plus' and accelerated ones?

First, they're more complex, as they have more components to install and test.
Second, there's quite few more of them than the base models.

They'll get them done. Relax.

I could imagine some delays to check what causes these scratches some people are reporting, and the one or two cases where some keys broke off during shipping, to see if it's possible to add a workaround to the packaging.

No trouble at all. Why would you think there was?

Without any personal inside knowledge, I can infer that SMS is a small-to-medium-sized factory with perhaps a few dozen employees. There are about 3000 Nexts to be built and tested. At best, only a few hundred can be done per day. It's manual work, done carefully, not some futuristic automated robot-driven affair (which doesn't even exist in China for assembly, only for component and subsystem manufacture. Current machines are not precise or intelligent enough for that, even for the mega-corps like FoxConn).

Whichever ones are prioritised first, and however they are batched, it is an unescapable logical consequence that the ones which are manufactured last will be shipped many days later than the first ones!

The machines are precise enough. It's just that building the machine to build the machines ends up costing more than just using humans. =)
