Board update

Postby Olifiers » Tue Jun 27, 2017 1:05 pm

Hi folks,

Quick update on the board manufacturing. Victor is almost done with the final design, just missing a couple of components. There was also some back and forth on screw holes as required by the keyboard/case, while remaining compatible with the original Speccy case.

We aim to lock the design this week, then send it for a test batch at SMS -- hopefully this will include a visit of myself and Jim, so expect photos of the endeavour. Once this batch is done (usually 2-3 weeks), we test it for a week, patch if necessary, and we're ready for the full run of 400 or so boards we'll ship in August straight from SMS to the backers' address.

We're still on track, following the master plan! ;)

Wow great! (I just posted in the thread asking for hardware updates!).

So SMS will be loading the firmware etc and testing?

Yes, we're concentrating all the manufacturing, setup, testing and logistics in the same place to avoid delays and confusion. The folks at SMS are very professional, we've worked with them in the past two batches (Issue 0 and Issue 1) without a hitch.

Just a quick question (not to highjack the thread) but is there a plan to uniquely mark the initial units as the ones that made the kickstarter happen? I mean, circuit board colour or etched as kickstarter version?

Cheers and keep up the great work.

I'm not aware of a plan to do this. If a board were to fail and another was required then this would also need to be marked accordingly, which would mean having spares (which will be required) that could only be used to replace KS units? Not sure how viable that would be given the numbers. Not that I'm implying failures :)

The differentiator for backers is the price, and the knowledge that they willed this into existence, but who knows whether a revision will happen that could mean newer boards having an increment?

Also since the shop is taking orders and they are being built *at the same time * then you you need to careful you don't send a KS special edition to a non KS buyer. I know the KS units will be sent out first but the boards will be made in one run.
