Upgrading the RAM

Post by MikeCad » Sat Aug 26, 2017 8:28 am

As per the post on the RAM type at viewtopic.php?f=4&t=446&p=2094#p2094 the Next can be upgraded from 1MB to 2MB RAM. There are two empty sockets on the board capable of taking 512KB memory modules.

The sockets are 40 pin. The memory chips are 36 pin. This means we have four pins in the sockets that don't do anything. Why? Because these kinds of sockets have long since been out of production. It was a long search to find a company that had suitable moulds, possibly propping up a wonky table leg. No 36 pin socket moulds could be found and so we were left with the 40 pin type. The company in question had not made these sockets in 14 years.

To fit the RAM you need to align the chip correctly with the socket. There is a small depression/hole in one corner of the memory chips. There is a cut out section on one corner of the sockets. These need to align as per the photo. The chip should be in the bottom of the socket with four spare pins showing at the top.
