i'm interested in the screen resolutions and the video hardware especially the gpu on the raspberry pie does anyone know about it does it support 1080p?

For the Next the screen can be thought of as three layers, the spectrum layer, layer 2 and sprites which all support transparency and can be ordered in any way. Each layer has its own palette to select from 512 available colors. The spectrum layer has 4 video modes: lo-res - 128x96 with 256 colors, standard - 256x192 with 8x8 attributes, hi-color - 256x192 with 8x1 attributes, and hi-res - 512x192 2 colors. Layer 2 is 256x192 in 256 colors. There is support for 64 sprites from 64 patterns with 12 (corrected from 16) displayable on a single line.

The accelerator for the Pi is a work in progress, The Pi's GPU is a Video Core IV and supports up to 1080p screen resolutions.

The sprites can also go in the borders, which extend 32 pixels on all four sides at 50Hz, giving you a notional 320x256 resolution on that layer. However you can only have 12 sprites on any one pixel line, and only 64 sprites in total, so you can’t stack up sprites like tiles to cover the whole border. Also, some of the upper and lower border is cut off in 60Hz display mode.

But it is possible to put graphics in the borders - my Spectron 2084 has the score and status messages in the upper and lower borders, in the area still visible at 60Hz, and some of the graphics drawing programs put their tool selection windows in the border.
