ZX Spectrum Next Core Released under GPL 3 License

Postby Alcoholics Anonymous » Tue Feb 04, 2020 2:22 am

As machines will be shipping imminently, the fpga source code has been made public to fulfill a promise made by the kickstarter.

The core version is the latest at 3.01.00 and is the day zero update. This is not the end of development as there is still a to-do list being walked through. The hope is to complete the specification for the second kickstarter.

Allen, you and the Next team have done an incredible work! The Next has really undergone an evolution the latest year.

I have only browsed the repo so far but everything looks very well organized with clean modules and interfaces :) A joy to read!

Does this mean that people in the ZX Uno community can convert it for there devices as well?

In theory yes, with quite a few modifications due to different size of FPGA.
Backer 423 @ 37% funded, 10th hour. Base version. Shipping nr. 533. Received February 19, 2020.
Backer 1027 @ 141% funded, 10th minute.

Original 48K (issue 4b) with IF1, two microdrives and vDrive.

The uno contains a smaller fpga so I don't think it will fit there. A lot of stuff could be removed for the uno -- hdmi, expansion bus, pi interface, etc, but I don't think that will be enough to make it fit. The dos is using the same size fpga but some external hats may be needed to make it successfully run the next core.

Antonio Silva has now released the Next core for the ZXDOS. from Facebook:

“Hi, the ZX Next Core for ZXDOS board are published in following links, core: https://github.com/zxdos/binaries/blob/ ... issue2.ZX2 , sources: https://github.com/zxdos/sources/tree/master/zxnext

Antonio Villena is still making and selling cased ZXDOS units, although apparently he is currently experiencing supply issues due to current events in China.

I've having a look as I'm also owner of a ZXDOS, but I couldn't find the binaries in there, and specifically I couldn't find the .ZX2 file that ZX-DOS uses for cores. Is that available anywhere?

It is! Here: https://github.com/zxdos/binaries/blob/ ... issue2.ZX2

My DOS arrived yesterday but I’m sick, so I haven’t explored yet.
