Text Adventures on the Next?

Postby Stupidget » Fri Aug 18, 2017 4:46 pm

Back in the day I was a massive fan of text adventure on my trusty rubber keyed 48k beauty. Some of my favourites were The Hobbit (obviously), Bored of the Rings, Lord of the Rings (which would now be playable on a Next in turbo mode), Shadow of Mordor, Sherlock, Terrors of Trantos and Se-Kaa of Assiah. By the time Magnetic Scrolls were releasing their classics I'd pretty much stopped playing Speccy games and was far more interested in listening to John Peel, knicking fags off my mum and thinking of the next poor girl I was going to ask out next :D

Anywho, I think it'd be great if there could be a new-wave of text adventures for the Next and maybe some of the classics could be refreshed with new mulicolour graphics. I used to use GAC and it'd be amazing if that could be configured to exploit the extra memory and graphical capabilities of the Next.

Cor blimey, I remember GAC. Picked up a second hand 128K+ with about 70 games from a local family in Ipswich(their son wanted to put the money towards an Amiga), and GAC came with it. I honestly couldn't program to save my life at that time, but I remember GAC being fairly straight forward to use. I tried to make a King Kong adventure, but I guess I just didn't have the resolve to see it through - I was about 12 at the time.

Did GAC ever become open source?

Joe, Orion Prime looks great!

I am wondering how they managed to store so many full screen images in - presumably - the CPC 464's 64k of memory...

Both those examples look excellent.

Something like this would be great:

The 128 Hobbit remake is excellent. I'd love to play some of the Rainbird adventures but now with great graphics:
