Hmmmm.... without getting them all down from the loft and getting all nerdy about it, I'd have to say

1. R-Type
2. Bombjack
3. Head Over Heels
4. Trapdoor
5 Yie Ar Kung-Fu (I know, my guilty pleasure. Got addicted playing it on a mate's C64 so had to have it on the Speccy ;) )

An almost impossible choice, I'd say. But…

1. Jet Set Willy
2. Manic Miner
3. Tir na Nog
4. Dynamite Dan II
5. Ant Attack 3D

But there are plenty of others I feel terrible about leaving off the list, such as Trashman, Highway Encounter, Fred, Jetpac, Urban Upstart, RanaRama, Quazatron, Cyclone, Southern Belle, Scrabble, Splat!, Arcadia, Three Weeks in Paradise, Technician Ted the Megamix, Lords of Time, Out of the Shadows, Twin Kingdom Valley and countless others.

I think it would depend what day you asked me on, but in terms of persistent memory and the game play experiences I remember quickly through to this day:

1) Elite
2) Chaos
3) Chuckie Egg 2
4) Rollercoaster
5) Jack the Nipper 2

Honorable mentions, games that could easily be in the list if I answered this question another day:

Attic Attack, Lunar Jetpac, Tir Na Nog, Valhalla, Cybernoid, Exodus, Game Over, Zybex, Jet Set Willy, Monty Mole (any), Thing on a Spring, Bruce Lee, Transformers, Zoids, Laser Squad, Turrican, R-Type, Turbo Esprit (the older I got the better it played), Saboteur II (ditto), Zynaps, Renegade, Bobby Bearing (mostly because my copy broke and would only load occasionally, so this is my persistent memory of desperately wanting to play a game but having to wait days to do so, fiddling with volume; retrying etc.), Commando, Flying Shark, Ikari Warriors

I'd better stop there, that was a lot longer than I thought I remembered and more are popping into my head. Nostalgia is one heck of a drug. :D
