The Spectrum Next Digital Audio Workstation

Post by KyotoG » Sat Sep 09, 2017 11:39 am

It's been a while since my last update on my music editor/player, so here's a rough and ready one. I've been concentrating on the piano roll editing side of things, and porting a lot of the editor code to z80 for speed and to reduce the memory footprint. Excuse the music - it's just test data! Soon, I'll be focussing on the patch editing side of things, after I sort out some more code banking as memory is running out. The main changes since the last video include:

Visual/editing
+ Marquee selection of notes
+ Selection and edit mode hotkeys
+ Multi select notes using hotkeys
+ Drag and drop of notes
+ Transport bar
+ Piano roll scroll bar
+ Track buttons to select which track to edit
+ Track volume sliders

Under the hood
+ Banking of code and data
+ Rewrite of note editing code
+ Ported time critical rendering code to z80

Wow, that looks great indeed. In fact, it looks like this might become my favourite toy on the Next.

I've been posting periodic updates on the Facebook group but forgot to post here, so here we go.

Here's longish video (running in ZEsarUX) demoing the patch editing. Features include Volume ADSR, Vibrato, Glide/Legato, Delay (uses secondary channel delay soon), amplitude and pitch sequencers. Since this video was made, I've also added a noise sequencer and hardware envelope controls.

Here's a video capture running on the real Next hardware playing a cover of YMO's Rydeen. This is the main song arranger screen, which I will make a demo video in the near future.

Cheers!

Excellent work. I second the comments above from adam that I wish my knowledge of music was a lot better!

Very cool. Do you have any plans to use the SpecDrum? It'd be awesome to trigger/sequence the SpecDrums outside of the original (kinda crappy) sequencer. Especially if there were some options to change pitch/gate/accent etc.
